Sexual addictions are rapidly increasing in occurrence in the United States. Sex and the idea of sex seem to dominate the sex addict’s thinking, making it difficult to concentrate at work or engage in healthy personal relationships. A sex addict may use the brain’s pleasurable response to sex to seek pressure, avoid stress, or numb unpleasant feelings much like an alcoholic uses alcohol. This results in exposure to excessive amounts of pornography, a lack of intimacy in current relationships, a tendency to objectify women, and even crimes of sexual offense.
Our therapists are trained in treating an addiction to sex and often utilize a 12-step program or the Patrick Carnes’ sexual addiction workbook along with weekly individual therapy sessions. Breaking the cycle of sexual addiction can calm the storm within as well as heal the relationships with the people most important to the addict.
Male and female counselors are available at The Antioch Group for individual and marital counseling for both the sex addict and his or her spouse.
